Sizes and Styles

Hearing aids come in a variety of styles and sizes.  The size and style that is most appropriate for you depends on the following factors:

  • The severity of your hearing loss
  • The physical shape of your ear
  • Your manual dexterity
  • Type of features you are looking for in a hearing aid   

Behind-the-ear (BTE)

  • offers fitting flexibility in addition to power
  • appropriate for mild to profound hearing losses
  • longer battery life than smaller styles

 

 

In-the-ear (ITE)

  • custom made shell
  • good choice for those with limited manual dexterity
  • appropriate for mild to severe hearing losses

In-the-canal (ITC)

  • fit deeply into the ear
  • popular choice for cosmetic appeal
  • large enough to accommodate external controls
  • appropriate for mild to moderately-severe hearing losses

 

Completely-in-the-canal (CIC)

  • custom made shell
  • some restricitons based size of ear canal
  • appropriate for mild to moderate hearing losses

On-the-ear (OTE)

  • much smaller than any traditional BTE
  • sound reaches the ear with a thin tube that connects to a soft earbud that fits deep into the canal
  • invisible appearance
  • reduces the plugged up feeling that accompanies many traditional styles
  • appropriate for mild to moderately-severe losses
